Special moments

The most amazing thing happened last night. Nelson and I were in the living room watching tv when, all of a sudden, Nutmeg ran across the room and leapt up onto the window ledge. She was staring intensely outside so we knew something was out there.

Nelson sat up straight and looked. He said "There are deer in the yard. And one is coming closer. It's looking right at me!" so I slowly moved from my place in the chair over to the sofa next to him. I looked but didn't see the deer.

"Where is it?" I whispered.
"It's right next to the window."

And that's when I saw it. This young deer, with it's nose less than two feet from the glass, peering up at Nutmeg who was sitting stone still.

Nelson and I were mesmerized, as I'm sure Nutmeg was, too. Then the deer turned, and with a flick of its tail, it was gone. We could see others in the shadows moving around out there, but the vision of that beautiful little deer with the moist black nose and big dark eyes looking up into the window, the glow of the room lights illuminating its face, will stay with me forever.
