Tiny wishes

I found a package of frozen bird parts in the bottom of the freezer yesterday. I wasn't sure what was in there since it was from Dave's hunting trip last winter and he brought it home already packaged and frozen. I could tell that two were goose breasts and there was a stuck-together clump of what I thought were duck breasts. So I thawed the duck enough to break off 5 breasts and put the remaining clump back in the freezer.

When they thawed a bit further I realized that they were whole breasts, with the bones intact, not fillets like he usually brings home. I put them in a lightly oiled baking dish with a cup of veggie broth and a healthy dose of red wine. An hour later they smelled wonderful, even to a vegetarian like me.

Dave sat down at the table, commented on how good dinner smelled, then asked "are you sure these are duck breasts?" As if I would know! He is the one who shot them! Then he remembered that on the last trip they hunted for goose and quail. So we had quail for dinner, served with green beans & almonds and a curried rice pilaf with currants, and it was good! Yes, I ate some, too. Check out this tiny little wishbone. It's sitting on my size 5 1/2 wedding ring for scale. Make a wish, but just a little one!

Now excuse me while I go polish my ring.
