Rustic is good

I had this small (1.4 oz) ball of local corriedale that I bought right around the time I took my first spinning class. It's quality is questionable; no vegetable matter but a lot of noils, a strange texture, and an odd soapy smell. It's been sitting here for almost a year and I keep moving it from place to place. So this week I decided to do something with it.

It spun quite easily despite the noils, which I decided to embrace rather than fight. After plying and washing in Soak it's softer and smells a lot better. And despite my uncertainty about the roving, I like the rustic quality of the finished yarn. 82 yards, approximately worsted weight. Enough for a hat or neckwarmer? We shall see.

That yarn looks so smooshy. :) What's a noil?

A noil is a little ball of broken fibers that are usually removed in the carding process. This roving was full of them so I left them in instead of trying to pick them all out.
